A Very Special Visitor at Shore: Nibi the Beaver!

It’s not every day that a beaver comes to school! Shore’s Grade 1 students recently welcomed a special guest to campus — Nibi the Beaver. They watched her arrange sticks, enjoy a snack, and demonstrate some of the behaviors that make beavers such fascinating animals. The visit gave students an up-close look at an animal they might otherwise only encounter out in nature.

For Charlotte W., meeting Nibi was a first.  “It was so much fun to see Nibi! This was my first time seeing a beaver in real life. She was so funny making a dam with the sticks,” shared Charlotte.

Beavers play an important role in their ecosystems. By building dams, they can create wetlands that provide habitats for other animals. Watching Nibi interact with her toys and arrange sticks gave students a firsthand glimpse of the behaviors that help beavers reshape their surroundings.

Edward C. especially enjoyed watching Nibi snack on one of her favorite treats. “It was fun to see Nibi eat her favorite food - pears! She picked it up like a person and made funny noises!”

Nibi’s visit was made possible through the efforts of Newhouse Wildlife Rescue and Shore’s faculty and staff. Seeing Nibi up close gave Grade 1 students a chance to observe how beavers behave and learn more about the important role they play in the natural world.
