Our Philosophy

Shore’s philosophy is expressed in the two pillars of our mission: we believe challenge inspires children to take charge of their own learning, and we value personal growth as the foundation for success in a global community. Every aspect of Shore’s program is carefully designed to support these two pillars.

From their first days in our early learning classrooms, Shore students are encouraged by experienced, caring faculty members to stretch their intellect and imagination as they explore the world and seek answers to their own inquiries. Children find ample time and space to ask questions, to be creative, to build knowledge with their peers, and to reflect and play, indoors and out. Even the youngest learners explore science, music, art, and world language, and they quickly learn to express their ideas and feelings through writing and discussion with classmates. They work together to design solutions in the SAIL classroom, garden, or iLab, using the principles of Design Thinking to brainstorm, prototype, and refine their approach.

These aspects of Shore’s program grow more challenging as students move through upper elementary and middle school grades. In English, history, and science classrooms children examine primary sources through Harkness-style discussion, learning to debate, defend their ideas, and disagree respectfully. Opportunities are plentiful to pursue creative work in the art and music studios and on the stage of the Trustey Family Theatre; the independent study program means Upper School students may invent their own area of focus. As mentors, advisors, and coaches, faculty members push young learners to find the connections between all that they do, seeing the threads that link their work in history and English or science and mathematics. Through it all, students become advocates of their own education, ready to question, listen actively, and ask for help when it’s needed.

As students are inspired to take charge of their own learning, they are also growing personally, discovering themselves through Shore’s social-emotional curriculum, which begins on the first day of school and stretches to graduation. The centerpiece of this growth is the Community Code, which articulates a shared set of personal aspirations—kindness, respect, openness, accountability, and responsibility—for all members of the community. Through daily classroom practice and experiences such as team sports, service learning, and House meetings, Shore students learn the value of building relationships—across grades and groups—and giving back. Equity and social justice education are part of the curriculum—and part of life—at Shore.

Beyond the values embodied in the Community Code, children turn to the support of teachers and their peers as they are encouraged to take risks in every aspect of their school lives—from stepping on the stage for the first time to braving an overnight trip. Performance, public speaking, exploring the outdoors, and the give-and-take of collaborative discovery define the path toward an authentic voice, the confident sense of engagement with the world and with others that lasts a lifetime. Shore students are asked, time and again, to step outside their comfort zones, questioning their own assumptions, relishing new and unfamiliar experiences and ideas, bouncing back from failure with new determination, accepting feedback from peers and confidently offering their own. When they leave Shore, children are prepared to engage fully—as scholars and as citizens—in secondary school, post-secondary education, and in life.
