A Taste of the Ancient Past: Grade 3 Bread Baking at Shore

The delicious smell of freshly baked bread filled the air as Grade 3 continued an annual Shore tradition: making homemade bread and baking it using methods inspired by the ancient past. Students experienced firsthand how something as simple as a loaf of bread can offer a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of civilizations long ago.

The day began in the homeroom classroom, where students gathered to prepare their dough from scratch. Everyone took turns mixing ingredients, kneading the dough, and carefully placing their creations into clay flowerpots before heading outside for the baking process. Four loaves were baked in the SEA Shore oven, while another four were cooked using a traditional ground oven.

Mr. Henderson was beaming with pride as students sampled the results. “This year turned out awesome! The kids all preferred the extra crispy ground oven bread!” he shared.

Grade 3 student Jack S. couldn't agree more! “It was so fun getting messy and rolling the bread into balls! But I liked eating the bread even more - it was really crunchy and good!”
Making the experience even sweeter, students enjoyed their freshly baked bread with honey harvested from Mrs. Babcock’s own backyard beehive!

While the bread was certainly a highlight, the experience was rooted in Grade 3’s study of archaeology and ancient civilizations. Throughout the unit, students explored how archaeologists use ruins and artifacts to piece together the stories of communities that lived thousands of years ago. By studying discoveries such as the remains of ancient bakeries, students learned how everyday objects and structures can reveal the ways people once prepared food, worked, and lived.

Bringing those discoveries to life through their own bread-making experience allowed students to connect classroom learning with the past in a memorable, hands-on way.
From investigating ancient ruins to kneading dough and tasting the final product, this beloved Shore tradition reminds students that history isn't just something we read about — it's something we can explore, experience, and even taste!
