Music In Our Schools Month at Shore

Every March, the National Association for Music Education highlights the importance of prioritizing quality music education with Music In Our Schools Month. Since 1985, this observance has encouraged schools to champion their music programs, promote the benefits of learning an instrument to students, and advocate for equitable access to this type of education for all students. Over the years, the importance of the messaging behind the dedicated month has only grown, and Shore's outstanding music programs make it a perfect place to celebrate.

Upper School Music Teacher Jennifer Boyum and Lower School Music Teacher Lauren Notas teamed up this year to go above and beyond for Shore students, focusing specifically on one week to center the celebration around. Students received musical pencils in class, watched 'Encanto', played music trivia, invited families to campus for open music classroom sessions, listened to live music from the Luna Trio at lunch, and finally capped it all off with a fantastic music-themed House Meeting featuring multiple exciting performances! At the beginning of the assembly, Upper School student Knight S. and classmates greeted the audience and provided some additional information. "Music In Our Schools Month raises awareness for the importance of creating equal opportunities for music education for all children, and highlights the important role music plays in students' academic, social, and emotional lives," began the Grade 8 student, a talented pianist himself. The House Meeting then transitioned into performances featuring Shore A Cappella, Chamber Ensemble, Marimba Ensemble, Staff Band, and a fun slideshow featuring Shore faculty and staff during their younger days as musicians. Finally, the meeting ended with a heartfelt sing-a-long of John Lennon's Imagine, combining the entire Shore community's voices into one. The camaraderie felt and the beautiful sound that resonated throughout the Trustey Family Theatre are perfect examples of what it means to be a part of the supportive Shore community.
