Shore Alumna, Laurie Patton ‘76, Named Next Middlebury College President

In a unanimous vote in November, the presidential search committee announced their decision to appoint Dr. Laurie Patton as the first woman president of Middlebury College. As dean at Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts and Sciences and the Robert F. Durden Professor of Religion, Laurie oversees many of the arts and sciences departments and programs. She was integral in developing and establishing many forward-thinking initiatives across the Duke campus, such as the only global advising program in the country, and maintains a focus on women’s education, both locally and globally. Those on the search committee felt Laurie’s credentials propelled her to the top over all the other candidates.

Laurie grew up in Danvers and is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall, Harvard College, and the University of Chicago.

You can hear Laurie’s personal views on numerous topics on the Middlebury College website.

Congratulations, Laurie!
