Margaret McFadden '16 Encourages Students to Follow Their Passion

Shore welcomed alum Margaret McFadden ’16 for a presentation on her work in the professional world of theatre. McFadden has had an exciting career in the industry from a very young age, and shared how she began her college education at Berklee College of Music, studying to be a professional performer. From there, despite receiving a callback from a Broadway audition, she decided to embrace an expanded view of the theatre world, transferring to the University of Michigan for its incredibly strong theatre and education programs. As a theater teacher at Salem State University and other schools, McFadden credited her decision to transfer as a catalyst for great success in her career, and encouraged students to always keep their options open, reminding the audience that, “You can change your mind at any point, you can change your path at any point, and you should never feel like it’s too late!”

Next, McFadden spoke about the creation of her new regional theatre company, The Hive Theatre Company, which is in the midst of its premiere season. She shared powerful words of inspiration, encouraging students to become comfortable taking steps outside their comfort zone, and to pursue their dreams and passions with everything they have. “Follow your passion — if it’s something you’re passionate about, pursue it! The best part about being at school is that you’ve got the freedom to do that, and you’ll never have more opportunities to try things. Do things that scare you, audition for the play, go to voice lessons, go to dance lessons, and know your limits, but don’t limit yourself. Just try things!” The words clearly resonated with Upper School students, many of whom asked thoughtful questions, which McFadden was happy to answer. Shore is fortunate to have such dedicated and driven alumni, like McFadden, who generously share their time to inspire our students to follow their dreams.
