A Heartfelt Annual Tradition: Grandfriends Visiting Day

Shore’s Grandfriends Visiting Day is a heartfelt annual tradition, celebrated each year leading into Thanksgiving Break. The morning is one of the most highly anticipated events for the Shore community, as students eagerly look forward to sharing a slice of their day-to-day life with their grandparents and special friends.

In the Trustey Family Theatre, the program began with an energetic performance by Grade 4 of Uptown Funk on the bucket drums. Visitors then received a warm welcome from Head of School Amber Bock, and got a glimpse into a Grade 1 morning meeting as the students shared their classroom greetings and affirmations. Guests were then treated to joyful musical performances by Grade 3 and 4 students, as well as Grade 8 student Knight S.’ deeply passionate rendition of Hallelujah on the piano. The closing performance of The Rainbow Connection was accompanied by a short message from Bock speaking on the year’s theme of a ‘double rainbow year,' with an emphasis on symbolism and how the theme inspires students to aspire to be their best selves.

As the program finished and guests were leaving the theater, they were treated to the sound of Grade 8 students playing Shore’s brand new marimbas, the purchase of which was made possible by generous support from our donors.

As the morning went on, campus was buzzing with positive energy, as grandparents and special friends enjoyed accompanying students throughout their daily activities, fostering connections. In the gym, Pre-K students teamed up with their grandparents and special friends to compete in a ‘shopping cart relay race,’ laughing together as they stacked ‘groceries’ on miniature scooters. Meanwhile, in Lower School and Upper School Science Teacher Erik Swanson’s room, a classic experiment involving density, mass, and volume prompted students and guests to team up for a boat-building competition, with an added bonus round for the team that created the lightest boat that could still hold the required number of paperclips. Elsewhere, Grade 3 students showcased their work from their Ancient Egypt unit while students in Upper School English Teacher Amanda Berg’s room convened around the Harkness table with their grandfriends and special friends.

One of the most important parts of the entire Grandfriends Day experience is creating space for connections to flourish across generations, and creating cherished memories for years to come.
