Recognizing the Life and Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Assembly provided an opportunity for the Shore community to take a moment to recognize the life and work of one of our nation's greatest civil rights leaders, and a man who made our country a better place. An opening address from Head of School Amber Bock and a soulful performance from a chorus made up of Upper School students, faculty, and staff set the tone for what was to be a heartfelt morning in the Trustey Family Theatre, as community members joined for a morning of remembrance and reflection.

Grade 4 students read We Are Here by Tami Charles aloud for the audience, illustrated by Bryan Collier. The book is written in a lyrical format that celebrates the people, cultural influences, and historical moments of black men and women in our history.

A dramatic reading and visualization performance, put together by Grade 6 students using hopes and dreams they have for the future of our country and our world, was a touching tribute to the work of Dr. King, and honored his dedication to bringing people together and to being accepting of people from all backgrounds and beliefs. "That all people will have a roof over their heads and food in their stomachs, that wealthy people can share more of their fortunes with the less fortunate, and that we build more homeless shelters across the nation," were three of many different 'dreams' that Grade 6 students shared with the audience, all the while acting out their various 'dreams' in beautiful group movement on stage.

As Bock thanked our guests and dismissed students to their classrooms, the heartfelt event concluded on a positive note. Beautiful performances such as these highlight the continued commitment of the Shore community to honoring the messages and sentiments contained in Dr. King's life's work, and to making our campus a welcoming place for all people.
