Stock Market Project

Every year, Shore’s Grade 7 class engages in their Stock Market Project, one of the most anticipated and exciting projects of the year. Students pair up into teams of two, working closely together to do thorough research on recent market trends and analytics, and eventually selecting a number of different stocks from the current stock market to "trade".

Students are given a fixed amount of money at the beginning of the project, and are allowed to buy and sell their stocks over a set period of time, usually a few weeks, competing all the while against their classmates to earn the most money. The "winners" vary in strategy from year to year as market conditions change, like when Isabella H. 's team won two years ago thanks to smart investments surrounding unusual market activity, or when Jonathan S.' team won last year thanks to maintaining a carefully managed and balanced profile. "Our most interesting stock at the moment is probably a business called Kratos Defense and Security," says Grade 7 student Zayaan F., "as the name suggests, it's a security company, specializing in IT and technology services."

This project goes a long way towards helping students develop a strong foundational understanding of the stock market and trading. It provides an opportunity to get a step ahead on their future financial literacy journey. In the past, Shore has been fortunate to host financial experts from our community, such as Steven Connolly, a local finance professional and Shore parent, for workshop sessions with Grade 7 students and to take questions about the market from the class.

"The stock market project is such a favorite for our students," says Head of Upper School and Director of Secondary School Counseling Oliver Hay. "At a recent Alumni event, two former students, one a senior in college and the other just out of college, talked to me about how influential the project was in their lives. And, this was from students who are heading towards fields other than finance, which displays the broad appeal of this learning experience!"

The lasting impact of creative projects such as this one on Shore students cannot be overstated, as exposure to real world processes such as the stock market encourages the growth of the full child, and prepares our students for success in all levels of education and their future lives.
