Three years ago, when the opportunity to become House Captains came up, we couldn’t resist. What better way to boost school spirit, get on stage, and cheer into the mic in front of the entire Shore community? Now, as we kick off our third year as captains, our goal remains the same: make sure everyone is having fun while helping our older students step up as leaders, guiding the youngest members of our Shore community.
The Shore House System is all about connection. It brings people together and builds a stronger, more inclusive community. Sure, we cheer for every House, but let’s be honest - we cheer extra hard for our own!
When you ask a Shore faculty or staff member what they love most about Shore, “community” is always the first word you’ll hear. That is definitely true for us! In our first year at Shore, we were struck by how warm and welcoming everyone was, and the House System is no exception! Former Marsh captain, Erik Swanson, and former Harbor captain, Ruth Bauer, welcomed us with open arms, and it instantly felt like a little home.
As current Harbor and Marsh captains, we have tried to carry that same spirit forward. We hand-deliver House t-shirts, create friendship bracelets, and lead a slightly competitive game of musical moose/crab. It’s not just Harbor and Marsh, captains in every House work hard to make their groups feel like a mini family.
Each year, captains come together to map out the fun. We take a look at the calendar and plan Friday morning B-Week House activities, alternating between all-school events and smaller group gatherings. We bring back favorite traditions, mix in some new ideas, and aim to blend high-energy games and more relaxed activities. Once the year is rolling, we meet bi-weekly to fine-tune plans and bring the House magic to life!
We’ve got some awesome events in store this year, and while we don’t want to ruin any surprises, we can say this: start warming up those hands. The infamous Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament is coming soon!
See you in the theater and stay tuned for more House fun!
