Third Grade Presents ‘Tut and Taylor’ as Annual Egyptian Play

On November 17, 2023 the third grade presented ‘Tut and Taylor,’ the latest iteration of the annual Egyptian Play. The Egyptian Play is a Shore tradition that is over 30 years old and is a unique infusion of iconic moments in Egyptian history and current events.

Written by former third grade teacher Sam Hamlin, ‘Tut and Taylor’ walked the audience through the periods of Ancient Egypt by way of the ‘Eras’ of award-winning music superstar Taylor Swift.

As Taylor contemplates the complexities of having a record-breaking tour and millions of adoring fans, King Tut appears. After realizing she doesn't need to call security on the iconic Pharaoh, Taylor and King Tut walk each other through the highs and lows of fame and superstardom, each learning from the other as the show goes on.

“There are so many reasons why participating in a play is an important part of student development,” said third grade teacher Anne Babcock. “It includes public speaking, organization, teamwork, time management, risk-taking, and much much more. As teachers, we love to see students discover things about themselves that they hadn’t previously known.”

“Some kids think, “I’m not good at acting” or “I can’t sing or dance,”” added Babcock. “Over the last few weeks, the kids realized they could do ALL these things and more.”

The Egyptian Play ties closely with the third grade curriculum focus on ancient Egypt as part of their year-long study of ancient civilizations. The authentic costumes and props are reused year after year, with many serving as decorations in the third grade classrooms.

Throughout its history, the play has become a school-wide favorite with all excited to see what they will learn about ancient Egypt through an artist's discography. Parents and caregivers of students across all grade levels are also eager to get involved, with Janelle Flaherty, parent of a Pre-K 2 student helping out this year by creating t-shirts for the cast.

Favorite traditions at Shore are the ones that bring the entire community together, and the third grade Egyptian Play is no exception!
