Students, Faculty Participate In Global #HourOfCode

From Thursday, December 10, to Friday, December 11, all Shore students and faculty took part in the Hour Of Code, a worldwide movement that challenges learners of all ages to try their hand at computer coding.

At Shore, coding events ranged from sophisticated javascript game programming by some Upper School students, to "offline" classroom challenges in Pre-K and Kindergarten.

Pre-K students had fun learning to "think in code" as they programmed "BeeBots" to navigate around their classroom, and Kindergartners had the opportunity to create step-by-step maps to guide each other through a floor maze.

Many older students were excited to learn coding basics through simulations based on the popular game Minecraft or the Star Wars movie saga. Teachers took part, too, many learning to code by playing alonside their students.

The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. The goal of the global campaign is for tens of millions of students to try an Hour of Code during the week of December 7-13, in celebration of Computer Science Education Week.

The Hour of Code is organized by Code.org, a public 501c3 non-profit dedicated to expanding participation in computer science by making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. Organizations that support the Hour of Code include Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Boys and Girls Clubs of America and the College Board.

According to Code.org, learning computer science helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity, helping to build the foundation for success in any 21st-century career path. Upper School Head Ben Kennedy would probably agree: he says these often unmeasured aspects of student development are key, and they are core to Shore's educational philosophy.

What's more, says Lower School Head Sara Knox, "the Center for Creativity brings all of this to the fore in every aspect of the curriculum."
