Digging In

It's not easy playing a high school junior varsity team on their home turf. Brooks was certainly bigger and stronger than our team, and they had plenty of talent. It was so gratifying, therefore, to watch Shore match their toughness and find new levels of intensity to tie the game. In fact, Brooks may feel lucky to have tied Shore considering the fact that we owned the possession game in the second half. We had to fight back more than once in this game. We were down 1-0 when Hanna scored, but soon Brooks went up 2-1, and then 3-1 by the half. Many teams would fold under the pressure of playing against a veteran team from behind. However, we struck back with a goal by Clare (assisted by Marcela from a defensive position), and then Sadie added another goal on a brilliant strike to tie the game. Despite constantly pressuring Brooks in the waning minutes, we had to leave Brooks with a satisfying tie. It was special to watch a team with a core of 8th graders take on a bunch of 16-18 year-olds and emerge with a tie. Go Shore!
