2022 School Year Takes Off at Annual Flag Raising

The morning of September 2 was sunny and cloud-free—the perfect backdrop to kick off the new school year at Shore’s annual Flag Raising. As scores of students, faculty, and caregivers gathered around the flagpole, Head of School Clair Ward started by welcoming new students and families.

“It is important that our new folks know that you are no longer a Shore visitor. Today we are all part of one, big extended Shore Country Day School family,” said Ward. “We are lucky to have you among us, as each new friend helps us to grow stronger.”

The Flag Raising ceremony signals the official start of the school year and is a special celebration where the Shore community joins together and eagerly awaits the unveiling of the coming year’s theme.

Ward, festively dressed in a black suit and airline captain’s hat, announced the 2022 – 2023 theme of Come Soar with Shore.

“Every successful flight begins with some instructions from the pilot: Shore students, families and employees, welcome aboard Shore Air flight 1936 with service from Cabot Street to new heights. We are currently first in line for take-off and are expected to be in the air momentarily. This year is going to be an amazing one on Shore Air!” exclaimed Ward.

She continued in character to transition to the anticipated event, “Before we take off, I am going to ask the ninth grade cabin crew to help raise the flag as we prepare to count down.” She also asked several student singers to join her near the flagpole, then led the crowd in counting to five and yelling, “Take off!”

From there, the American and Shore flags were hoisted upwards as a group of Shore students gave their rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

As the annual Flag Raising ceremony came to a close, students headed to their classrooms excited for a new year filled with adventure.
