Shore Hosts 6-Team Track & Field Invitational

Wednesday, May 9, was a day of surprises, but according to Head Coach Sarah Sklarsky Shore athletes showed typical resilience and grit while challenging Fenn, Fay, Nashoba Brooks, Pike, and Hillside on the track at Governor's Academy in a Shore-hosted invitational meet that was months in the planning. "With a large and talented field to compete with," said Sklarsky, "Shore's track stars continued to push themselves beyond what they had ever done before."

A beautiful day and a brand new, high school facility were the perfect setting for the competition. Unfortunately, Shore's track and field squad's meticulous meet preparation almost went awry when the team bus arrived late, which forced an unusual meet schedule with running events first, followed by field events as the evening light was fading. "As usual," reported Sklarsky, "Shore's athletes made the best of the situation, rolling with the punches and putting their best feet forward—and forward, and forward."

The field of six teams made for a high level of competition, challenging even Shore's most experienced athletes to keep pace in fast races. 22 new personal records were set by Shore athletes on the track, with both the 200 and the 400 standing out as great events for Shore.

Eighth grader Alex Schimmel, running the 400 in a heat full of talented runners, narrowly edged his closest opponent to surpass his previous personal best by nearly four seconds, setting a new school record at 56.58, two seconds ahead of the record previously held by the 2016 state champion in that event.

As many teams took off back to their schools, Shore and Hillside ran an abridged field event competition, with only two attempts allowed. Even so, and even as coldness and fatigue set in on top of tired running legs, Shore's field athletes managed 11 more personal best throughout the three jumping and throwing events.
