Fifth Grade 'Buzzee' is Star Fundraiser for Childhood Cancer Cause

As captain of his head-shaving fundraising team, the BALDStars, Shore fifth grader Logan Fairbrother was named "Buzzee of the Year" after becoming 2017's top kid fundraiser in the eighth annual "Buzz Off" held by the Massachusetts nonprofit, One Mission, to aid children with cancer. This year, Logan earned $14,000 for the charity, and along with his team, he brought in $28,000 for One Mission's cause. In recognition of his fundraising success, the Shore student had his head shaved by New England Patriot Rob Gronkowski at the main "Buzz Off" event at Gillette Stadium. The football star is also a supporter of One Mission's Buzz Off, and was the 2016 Buzzee of the Year.

Buzz Off for Kids with Cancer provides immediate relief for kids by making their hospital stay less intimidating through music and art therapy, sports outings, pizza parties, and financial relief grants. All proceeds from the Gillette Stadium event benefit the One Mission Resource Room at Boston Children's Hospital, as well as One Mission programs at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Hasbro Children's Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.

While Logan admits it was great to be named this year's top kid fundraiser and get the chance to meet Gronk, he says those aren't what inspired him to participate. "We were at a One Mission dinner," he explains, "and a dad was talking about his seven-year-old daughter, who was in the hospital. That's what made me want to become the top kid fundraiser; I wanted to help her."

The ambitious fundraising team leader works year-round to raise money, from putting up flyers in local stores to hosting paint night events and even sending letters to celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres. He also enlisted the help of fellow Shore students in the cause: pals Shane Cardarelli and Colin Costello both had their heads shaved for the first time last year as members of Logan's team.

Logan's mom, Janelle Fairbrother, says she's been impressed with Gronk's involvement in One Mission's cause, considering his "party-boy" image. "For all the attention he gets for that other side of him, he actually does a lot," she acknowledges. "He lets patients—who are called 'buzz buddies'—shave his head, and they get time to interact with him in a private 'VIP' room."

One Mission's programs directly benefit children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer, the families who support them, and the medical community that cares for them. These programs and services rely exclusively on philanthropic support as they are not reimbursable through insurance or eligible for traditional grant funding. To date, On Mission has raised more than $6 million to support kids with cancer.
