Shore Racers Score Big in State Track Meet
On Saturday, June 3, nine Shore athletes traveled to Clinton High School to compete in the Massachusetts Middle School State Meet. Racing against public, private, parochial, and homeschool students in the small-school division, Shore athletes made their team and their school proud. A fun day saw Shore runners supporting one another and enjoying each other's company, appreciating the talent and athleticism of their opponents, and staying focused and positive as the weather went from sunny to rainy and back again. A big stage with hundreds of athletes and spectators as well as a championship format meant longer waits, limited access to coaches, and stiffer competition than ever before, yet Shore athletes rose to these challenges one after another.
On the girls' side, the 4x100M relay team comprising Madeline Hammond, Sylvie Archer, Eleni Mazareas, and Camryn Flessel placed 11th in the state with a gutsy finish and smooth handoffs. In addition, Mazareas, competing in her third state meet for Shore, threw shot put, while Flessel raced the open 100, Hammond competed in high jump, and Claudia Clarke set a new personal best in the 400M. Capping off an incredible effort for this squad, Clarke became state champion in the high jump by clearing 4'6" with only one miss along the way, and Archer placed third in the same event!
On the boys' side, remarkably, all four competing athletes came home with hardware for their efforts. Ben Jones sailed over 5' in high jump without a miss to place 4th, Alex Schimmel set a new personal best in the 400M for 6th place, and Alex Oder became state champion in the 100M, leaving competitors in the dust in both his prelim and finals efforts, and even besting the Divison I time. To end a spectacular day, the boys 4x100M team of Patrick Carroll, Jones, Schimmel, and Oder set a new school record of 51.41, good enough for second place.
Congratulations were due to all Shore track stars after an amazing season. Coaches Sarah Sklarsky, James Hubbard, and Gretchen Bowder were proud of these accomplishments and excited for the future. Said Sklarsky, "Thank you to parents and supporters who made it all possible!"
