Spring Art Show & Concert Spotlight Creativity

On May 17, the annual Upper School Spring Art Show and Concert shined a bright light on the artistry and creative daring of Shore students—and of the teachers who inspire them with innovative ideas year after year.

Fine Arts Department Chair Ruth Bauer worked with ceramics instructor Riley Lucey to select and display Upper School artworks throughout the Center for Creativity. Highlights of this year's art show included startlingly realistic shoes created by eighth graders in the arts elective "Create with Clay;" cartoon characters dreamed up by inventive sixth graders; delicate, sophisticated ceramicware crafted by ninth graders; Tiffany-style stained glass lampshades designed and constructed by eighth graders in another arts elective; seventh graders' abstract stained glass compositions; and ninth graders' digitally illustrated, pop-art-style self portraits.

Meanwhile, the concert in the Trustey Family Theatre entertained families with clever selections from movies. Titled "Songs from the Silver Screen," the program presented favorite melodies from landmark films such as Star WarsBeauty and the BeastThe Sound of MusicGrease, and many more. Standout moments elicited applause throughout the concert: the glowing bows and instruments of the Shore Chamber Ensemble under the direction of Joey Tedesco; the faculty and staff Shore singers' rousing version of "Free Ride;" the Acafellas' and Puellae Cantantes' renditions of hits from Trolls and Minions; and the combined Upper School Choir's powerful concluding numbers from the Pentatonix and the movie Zootopia. The uplifting program was coordinated and conducted by Upper School music instructor Jenn Boyum.
