Shore Plans for Head's Retirement, Announces Search

Shore Country Day School’s longtime Head Larry Griffin will retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year, after a distinguished 30-year tenure during which his vision dramatically transformed Shore's mission and its campus.

In a communication to parents and the broader school community, Shore’s President of the Board of Trustees, Jennifer M. Borggaard, announced, “[Griffin’s retirement] is an occasion that will bring to a close the tenure of one of the most well-respected and most genuinely beloved independent school leaders anywhere. While the Board and many others in the community may wish Larry would extend his time with us, we understand and respect his decision to retire now when the school is in a remarkably strong position….”

Griffin has served as Shore’s Head of School since 1987. In his three decades at the Beverly institution, he has led the evolution of the school’s mission—once focused primarily on a rigorous, traditional style of education—toward an integrated, forward-looking approach that incorporates student-centered learning, the arts, athletics, and a culture of innovation throughout the curriculum. During his tenure, Griffin also oversaw a dramatic transformation of the school’s campus, most recently with the addition of the 30,000-square-foot Lawrence A. Griffin Center for Creativity.

In her announcement, Borggaard, herself an alumna of the school as well as a parent of three children currently at Shore, wrote, “As a multi-generation member of the Shore community, I believe that Shore is stronger today than it ever has been, and remains firmly grounded in its mission of inspiring the best in students, families, faculty, and staff. The Shore whose transformation Larry has led over the past three decades is today distinguished by facilities, faculty, leadership, and vision that are unmatched.”

In a letter that accompanied the Board President’s announcement, Griffin spoke about his decision to retire: “I love what I do, and I have been given the greatest professional privilege in being entrusted with the Headship of this exceptional school community. It is hard for me to even conceive of stepping away, but I know that this is the best and right time for Shore and for me.”

Shore is expected to begin the search for Griffin’s successor this January. More information is available on the Head of School Search website.
