It is our mission to instill a lifelong love of reading in all of Shore’s students, as well as to cultivate learning habits that foster critical thinking. Information literacy skills are taught to ensure that students are efficient and confident at locating, evaluating and using information from a variety of print and online resources.The instructional program in the library is directly related to Shore’s curriculum at each grade level. Skills are taught sequentially and are reinforced by their application to a wide variety of learning situations.
Students in Pre-K through Grade Five have a library class once a week. Lower elementary students hear a story relating to a unit from their classroom curriculum or one that reinforces a library skill. Older students, including those in the Upper School, learn research skills that will assist in research in the units they are studying in class. All classes learn how to access the resources they need whether it be for research or the pure joy of reading.
In order to appreciate good literature, students must be exposed to books that will excite them and spark their interest in reading. As part of library instruction, students frequently hear stories and books read aloud and engage in lively discussions. This reinforces the pleasures of reading as well as the purpose books serve in gathering information for course work.
