School Year Begins with Flag Raising

On an unusually hot and humid morning, Shore students, parents, faculty, and staff arrived for a joyful first day of school, and gathered around the flagpole to celebrate the start of the 2015-16 school year.

Before the ceremony, families and faculty mingled as students greeted one another exuberantly, found a place for their belongings, and shared summer stories in the halls and their homerooms. All were then invited to gather around the flagpole.

Head of School Larry Griffin spoke briefly to begin the ceremony, announcing the arrival of a new Shore flag to be raised just below the American flag. He also looked forward to Friday's first all-school Morning Meeting, when the entire community would assemble in their new Shore "houses."

Griffin next introduced this year's flag raisers, who secured the American and Shore flags to the pole. He then led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and introduced music teacher Jenny Lienhard, who sang an excerpt from "America the Beautiful" with piano accompaniment by Upper School Music Director Jennifer Boyum.

Before calling the ceremony to a close, Griffin announced two student birthdays that coincided with the first day of school, and led the singing of "Happy Birthday."

All were then dismissed with best wishes for a wonderful school year.
