Girls Varsity Lacrosse - Shore vs Fay (round 2)

The team was SO hyped, almost a little too hyped because we came out HARD, barreling down the field taking taking so many shots, firing all over the place, sometimes on cage and sometimes not even close!   I think we legitimately hit the Lower School building 4 times.

But, we kept firing.  We knew we had a substitution system of 6 midfielders on lines to keep fresh legs and that gave our midfield confidence to go ALL OUT for 3-4 minutes, and then get a sub.  The players would hover under the tent and utilize cooling towels to reset before getting back on the field.   It was a first half battle for sure.  Thank you to Casey who stepped into net for the first half, allowing only 2 goals.   At the half, the score was 3-2 Shore.

Deep breath, we huddled under the tent, drank our waters and our first half stats said it all.  We had 12 shots and only 3 goals.  Yes, their goalie was FANTASTIC.  But we needed to just shoot smarter, not harder.  We had to move her, get her off her marks, and go for placement.  We HAD to add our fakes before we shot because their goalie was just too good to take a straight-on shot from 8 yards out.    Thankfully, our defense was doing a super job keeping their quick, shifty #1 without a goal (Sasha Fates yet again shut her down the entire game - and I honestly don’t know if she even knew how to shake Sasha!!).  Meanwhile, Jill, Noelle, and Stella were SUPER strong stopping them (evening drawing a charge), and then getting the ball up to our our attackers time and time again to take it to goal..

Second half begins, and Dawson wins the draw, sprints all the way down to goal, she does a double fake on the keeper, and scores within 20 seconds.   And that was all it took for us to start breaking down the goalie.  Shot after shot, fake and shoot, fake and shoot, fake and shoot!!!  The second half, we also had 12 shots, but resulted in 9 tallies.  What a difference!!!!  Ellie Bagenstose, what a teammate, she offered to step on net for the second half to let the 8th graders finish their final game on the field.  Amazing.

It may have been the salsa and guac, it may have been the popsicles or it may have been the other team struggling with no warm up and serious bus legs…. But I think there is an even greater reason why the team pulled away with their 8th and final win.  They played with heart.  They played for their school pride, and they played for each other.  We are so proud of them!

A heck of a season.  Finishing 7-1-1.
Some fun stats:
We scored 109 goals for on the season.
We suffered 52 goals against on the season
Our goal differential was 57! (keep in mind, we didn’t have a goalie!!!)
71 assists on the season, which means 65% of our goals were assisted goals
Win percentage was 87.5%
Every single player scored at least 1 time in the season.
Every single player played at least 1 half in goal as goalie.

Congrats 8th graders!  Thank you captains Dawson and Reese.

See you Tuesday for training!  We will have a guest coach.  More on that to come.
