Free 'Saturday Studio' Highlights Music, Creativity

Shore's first 'Saturday Studio' of the year, on January 7, is a fun, free opportunity for families with children ages 3-7 to make music and get creative while exploring our arts curriculum for early learners.

From 9:00 - 10:30 a.m., kids and parents will have the run of Shore's music studios inside the Center for Creativity, where they'll be invited to sing, move, and explore a wide range of instruments and techniques from around the world. Young musicians and their families will love experimenting with the suite of Zimbabwean marimbas, global percussion, ukuleles, Orff instruments, and many more while they learn about Shore's rich music offerings in Pre-K through Grade 4.

Lower School music teacher Alex Asacker explains her approach: "Above everything else, I want children to enjoy music, to find joy in rhythm, singing, and movement," she says. "In terms of pedagogy, I like the approach of John Feierabend, who talks about children becoming 'tuneful, beatful, and artful.'"

Feierabend, considered one of the leading authorities on music and movement development in childhood, believes that encouraging enthusiastic participation in music is a way to build community. That philosophy is central for Asacker, and for Shore. "I talk a lot about teamwork with my students, and the idea that if we’re playing music as a class, then we have to work together. Everyone is important, and everyone is valuable in this room."

January's Saturday Studio is a perfect opportunity for children and parents alike to get a taste of the fun, interactivity, and inspiration in Shore's Lower School music program. They'll also have the chance to learn about our extensive schedule of performances in the Trustey Family Theatre, where students of every age are encouraged to take the stage and perform in front of audiences.

Asacker observes, "Whether it’s the marimbas, or a group singing for Grandfriends Day, or our little ones having a great time in the Halloween concert, celebrating occasions of all kinds on stage is an important part of our school, and our identity. Music shows how much the arts are an integral part of our experience at Shore."

No RSVP is required for this event.
