Lower Schoolers Raise $6,350 for Heifer International

In late spring 2019, third, fourth, and fifth grade students and teachers raised $6,350 in Heifer International's "Read to Feed" program, a fundraising read-a-thon that helps the organization assist millions of families around the world through donations of livestock and other goods that support self-sufficiency. 48 Shore students and three teachers read more than 300 books and raised funds toward the purchase of two cows, one water buffalo, four llamas, four goats, three sheep, three pigs, two rabbits, six bee colonies, eight flocks of chicks, two flocks of ducks or geese, three schools of fish fingerlings, three irrigation pumps, and two bundles of tree saplings. The money raised will also help send seven girls to school.

According to co-organizer Rondi Kilham, "We owe a big thank-you to Lower School homeroom teachers and Shore's librarians, co-organizers Chris Hubbard and Debora Collison, for making this year's read-a-thon a success."

Heifer International works with small-scale farmers to achieve an income sufficient to enable a decent standard of living, moving entire communities along the path from hunger and poverty to greater resilience. The organization trains people in sustainable farming, helps farmers gain access to markets, and empowers women. More than 75% of proceeds of Heifer's fundraising, including Read to Feed, directly support aid programs.
