Shore to Host Ron Lieber Seminar on Philanthropy

On February 1, 2017, Shore joins the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF) to present a motivating seminar with Ron Lieber, the best-selling author of The Opposite of Spoiled. The free event, which begins at 7:00 p.m. in Shore's Trustey Family Theatre, will teach parents ways to engage their children in the concept of giving back.

Lieber, the "Your Money" columnist for The New York Times, will address the how, when, and why to talk to kids about money and engage them in philanthropy. As parents raise their children to be compassionate, competent, and caring adults, Lieber will offer concrete tools and examples to help us think about how money and philanthropy help shape our children into thriving adults.

According to the author, "The foundation of the book is a detailed blueprint for the best ways to handle the basics: the tooth fairy, allowance, chores, charity, saving, birthdays, holidays, cell phones, checking accounts, clothing, cars, part-time jobs, and college tuition. It identifies a set of traits and virtues that embody 'the opposite of spoiled,' and shares how to embrace the topic of money to help parents raise kids who are more generous and less materialistic."

But, says Lieber, The Opposite of Spoiled is also "a promise to our kids that we will make them better with money than we are. It is for all of the parents who know that honest conversations about money with their curious children can help them become more patient and prudent, but who don’t know how and when to start." Many reviewers have praised Lieber's advice for families; for example, the Associated Press wrote, "The Opposite of Spoiled is flush with practical ways to incorporate money lessons into family life. . . . Lieber’s style is conversational and frank, with a sense of humor. . . . It’s rare to find a book about finance with so much heart."

The seminar is sponsored by ECCF's NextGen Philanthropy Initiative, which strives to educate, engage, and connect Essex County’s next generation of philanthropic leaders. Acccording to Carol Lavoie Schuster, ECCF's Assistant Vice President for Philanthropy, "Millennials and Gen X’ers will wield more philanthropic power than any generation before. ECCF wants to ensure that NextGen donors have the knowledge, tools, and support necessary to ensure long-term philanthropic impact on the community in which they live, work, and raise families."

Shore parent and alumna Weze Harrigan is a member of ECCF's NextGen Steering Committee; her passion for philanthropy was fueled by her parents, Binkley and Paula Shorts, who were deeply involved with ECCF in its early stages and serve on over a dozen other nonprofit boards in Essex County. Harrigan is just as passionate about passing on an understanding of the power of giving to her own children. She observes, "Seeing the bigger picture as a community member is vital to the future not only of Essex County, but to the world. Picking your head up, looking out at the needs and helping in any capacity makes a difference. It expands your happiness. It opens your eyes to reality and the challenges of life. It’s what I want my girls to experience now, even at 4 and 6 years old."

Says Shore's Director of Advancement Jody Johnson, "We are thrilled to be partnering with ECCF on this event. Ron's message is perfect for our families, many of whom, like the Harrigans, are already involved with ECCF and other community organizations. We're fortunate to have the beautiful Trustey Family Theatre to offer as the setting for what is sure to be an eye-opening seminar."
