Science Faculty to Present at State Conference

Science faculty Robin Koval and Jake Ahern have been invited to present their "Constructing a Functional Human Joint" project at the Massachusetts Association of Science Teachers (MAST) annual conference on November 5.

The presentation stems from a science unit last spring. In introducing the first part of their study of systems, Koval and Ahern asked Grade 7 students to research, draw, and label a joint (shoulder, elbow, hip or knee).

They researched the bones and connective tissues of the joint, the type of joint, and how the joint moves. They brought their research to the iLab and they worked with a partner to design/build the joint with the goal of knowing the parts and understanding how the joint moves. Included in their construction were the ligaments, tendons, and cartilage.

Says Koval, "It's no easy task to attach these tissues properly to the bones so that the movement is realistic. The students improvised and problem-solved on the fly using tools and materials in the iLab to bring their designs and knowledge to life."
