Parents Association Launches Committee On Representation and Equity

In January 2022, Shore’s Parents Association launched its Committee On Representation and Equity (CORE) with a well-attended virtual event. The program was full: it included an update from the Board of Trustees’ Equity & Inclusion Committee, an introduction to and overview of Shore CORE, information on Parent SEED (a monthly discussion group that helps parents explore issues of equity, inclusion, and diversity through personal reflection, structured group discussion, and experiential activities), Affinity Groups, a new CORE Speaker Series, and other parent resources. After Shore’s Equity and Inclusion Commitment was read aloud, breakout groups met to discuss what the statement meant to them.

The committee gifted T-shirts to all Shore students and employees to celebrate the launch. The T-shirts included the colorful logo and stated, "Find the CORE of your SHORE." Committee members explained, “We each carry unique and special traits that make us who we are, and as we explore and express our true selves, we strengthen and grow our school community. What is it about you that is special and makes our community stronger? What is at the core of who our students are? We hope this will inspire some great family conversations!”

By February, the CORE Speaker Series was underway. These presentations and discussions were all well-attended, and prompted thoughtful questions and conversation between attendees and the speakers.
  • February 24: "Why Should We Talk To Our Children About Race?” with Dr. Onnie Rogers
  • April 6: "The Gift of Neurodiversity" with Theresa Wiggins
  • May 10: “The Basics of Gender and Why it Matters in Education” with Alex Myers
Later in the spring, CORE launched a Shore Affinity Group Survey with the goal of collecting information to inform next steps. And during the summer, CORE will represent Shore at this year’s North Shore Pride Parade in Salem on June 25.
