Independent Study Leads to Fundraiser for Ukraine
On April 27, four eighth grade students organized a fundraiser for Ukraine as a part of their independent study about social justice, raising nearly $600 by selling ice cream sundaes to their Upper School peers.
During their independent study time, Ash Wolfgang, Sydney Pappas, Gavin Spencer, and Namya Bandi researched different organizations helping the people of Ukraine, and chose to collect donations to support the Boston-based nonprofit Sunflower of Peace, which provides medical and humanitarian aid to paramedics and doctors in the areas that are affected by the violence in Ukraine.
With the help of Chefs Laura Wood and Nancy Keaton, who provided the supplies, the group spent their lunch period dishing out ice cream and toppings to appreciative students, many of whom offered far more than the suggested $2 donation for their tasty treats. “I think today was a fun idea for a fundraiser and also enjoyable for everyone,” said Sydney Pappas. “On top of that, it generated a lot of money for a good cause.”
Namya Bandi said, “It makes me feel very good that I am helping citizens who are in need of supplies in Ukraine.” Ash Wolfgang commented, “I am glad that I can help people in need, and this is just a part of my dedication to social justice.” Gavin Spencer added, “Our donation allows people to easily support Ukraine and what they believe in.”
The students’ independent study mentor, Upper School Spanish teacher Pamela Torres, said, “I am proud to work with young people who are so dedicated to seeing beyond themselves to help others.”

The group was grateful for the generosity of the Upper School students and for the help of Taylor Newhall, who helped handle the money raised.
