Students, Employees Support Local Food Pantry through Art
Shore students and employees came together to help support the Open Door food pantry in Gloucester. The volunteers applied decorative glaze to ceramic bowls that will be part of an Empty Bowls fundraiser for the nonprofit.
Empty Bowls is a grassroots movement by artists and craftspeople around the world to raise money for food-related charities to care for and feed the hungry in their communities. Any organization may hold an Empty Bowls event to benefit food-related causes.
The Open Door’s fundraiser will support the organization’s mission of alleviating the impact of hunger in communities in the northeast corner of Essex County, a region that many Shore families call home.
Art teacher and Art Department Chair Ruth Bauer worked with fellow art teacher Alexa Smith to host open studio time where students and employees could gather, learn glazing techniques, and then decorate their own bowls. “It was a great opportunity to have some fun together while contributing to a worthwhile community organization,” says Bauer.
Empty Bowls is the largest fundraiser of the Open Door. Attendees of the event receive a meal of soup, bread, and a cookie in a ceramic bowl that has been hand-decorated by a member of the community. Bauer explains, “All guests at an Empty Bowls event take their bowls home at the end of the meal as a reminder that somewhere, someone’s bowl is empty.”
