Big Buddies Reunite!

One of Shore’s longest-running community initiatives, the Big Buddies Program helps nurture student relationships that last for years. The year-long program pairs fifth graders with a “Little Buddy” in Pre-K or Kindergarten, and students meet at least once a week for reading, math, and games. They also connect on the playground and on field trips, such as to Smolak Farms in the fall. Big Buddies learn leadership skills and little buddies gain an older mentor and friend on campus. This program is truly a Shore hallmark—connecting students across grade levels.

One long-lasting Buddy pair are Shore alumnae and current parents Alison McMaster ’92, P ’25, ’27 and Loren Malfitano Borges ’97, P ’31. Alison served as Loren’s Big Buddy as a 5th grader when Loren was in Kindergarten. They recently reconnected here on campus as current Shore parents.

Loren looks back fondly on her time as a Little Buddy. “It was a lot of fun! Alison and I would play, draw, and sit together at the Lower School Friday meetings in the Big Room. And Alison even came to one of my birthday parties at Roller World! We stayed connected while we were at Shore, always saying hello to each other—it was like having an older friend on campus. The last time we saw each other was when Alison graduated. It’s been so great to reconnect, now, as parents!”
