Grandfriends Day 2020 Features Virtual Concert, Video Greetings

On November 25, the day that is traditionally reserved for Shore's Grandfriends Visiting Day, the school community offered virtual versions of special events for grandfriends and families. According to Director of Advancement Katie Kozin, “We were thinking of our community of grandfriends and wishing we could have been hosting them on campus. Instead, we mailed packages to grandfriends’ homes and sent an e-mail with Thanksgiving greetings, including links to messages and a virtual concert!”

In a video message featuring Kozin and Head of School Clair Ward, Kozin expained, “Last year, one of my favorite events of the year was being together with all of you on Grandfriends Visiting Day, and we're disappointed not to be together with you, in person, right now.” She went on to thank Grandparent Chair Sue Sahovey GP ’26, and she underscored how important grandparents and special friends are in the Shore community. “When you show your love and support, you are helping to strengthen the home-school partnership that Shore seeks to nurture for each one of its students.”

Next, Clair Ward greeted grandfriends, emphasizing, ”We appreciate our partnership with you in helping to raise a curious, vibrant, and independent group of Shore students. ... All of us at Shore want to wish you a happy Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family remain safe and healthy this holiday season.”

A slideshow of images from the school year followed, and then grandfriends were invited to enjoy a virtual concert, ”Gonna Rise Up Singing,” featuring Shore students. The concert was organized by Upper School music teacher Jenn Boyum and Lower School music teacher Alex Asacker. Describing the concert, Boyum and Asacker said, ”During challenging times the arts provide respite. Our creative outlets offer us joy, comfort, and human connection. We hope these selections about peace, togetherness, and optimism will bring you cheer. The resiliency of Shore students reminds us that despite our worries and challenges we will continue to RISE UP SINGING.”
