Carrera is Nominated for Board of National Social Studies Council

Head of Upper School Gustavo Carrera has been nominated to serve on the Board of Directors of the National Council of the Social Studies (NCSS). Founded in 1921, NCSS is the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. Its mission is to advocate and build capacity for high-quality social studies by providing leadership, services, and support to educators.

Carrera is the recipient of the NCSS Teaching for Global Understanding Award as well as the World History Association’s Teaching Prize. Prior to coming to Shore in 2018, he served as chair of the History and Social Sciences Department at Buckingham Browne and Nichols, where he both helped make BB&N’s history curriculum popular with students and earned professional attention for it at the national level. On his nomination to the NCSS Board of Directors, he said,

“We undeniably live in a multiethnic, multicultural, and increasingly global society, and in recent years, we just as undeniably have experienced the re-emergence of ethno-nationalist movements. In order to prepare all students for membership in our participatory democracy, it is imperative that schools prepare them to understand these complexities without arriving at predetermined conclusions. Preparing citizens requires an introduction to civics and to the complex historical dynamics of our political institutions and our unique history, which we need to celebrate so that students identify with the founding values of our nation. But, more importantly, students must also understand the multiplicity of voices in our society, which does not undermine the national story. Social studies also need to be the intellectual space where students discuss and identify with the common good.”
