Students Show Support for Climate Strike

Shore students created signs and marched across campus on September 20 to show their support for that day's Global Climate Strike, a worldwide youth-led action to protest government and business inaction on climate change.

The coordinated protests in more than 150 countries around the world were inspired by young climate activists such as 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who began skipping school every Friday in her native Sweden to protest. She has since become an increasingly influential voice for youth climate activism, speaking before Congress and meeting with U.S. lawmakers.

According to Shore seventh graders Khyati Patel and Lucy Winthrop, who led the march at Shore, "We want to live in a healthy world when we grow up, so we want to help make a change rather than leave things as they are now." They said that science shows that change is necessary, and they appreciate the efforts of young people like Thunberg to spread the word. "Hopefully she can inspire adults to take action, too. Even though she's only one person, she might actually be able to change the world."
