Families Unite in Service
Dozens of Shore families joined together May 11 for United in Service, a partnership with the United Way now in its fifth year. Some 120 participants—including parents, students, faculty, and friends—donated 350 volunteer hours to support 10 different organizations around the North Shore. According to United in Service Co-Chair Patti Murphy, “The beautiful weather brought out the best in our community! Everyone worked hard to accomplish so much for worthwhile local causes that serve families in our area.”
Volunteers built beds for children at the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless in Lynn, sorted and organized food at Haven from Hunger in Peabody, filled garden beds and assembled financial literacy kits for the Beverly Children’s Learning Center, prepared soup kits and held a drive for Acord Food Pantry at the North Beverly Stop & Shop, sorted donated clothing to assemble complete outfits for Fostering Care, created garden beds for the Lynn Shelter Association, helped clean up gardens and campgrounds at the Torigian Family YMCA in Peabody, created cards, bookmarks, and flowers for patients at Beverly Hospital, and more.
United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals, families, and children in need throughout the North Shore. According to Sarah Bartley, Senior Director of Community Impact at United Way, “Our work and that of our partners makes a real impact on communities across the region, from Beverly and Gloucester to Lynn, Newbury, and Salem.”
Final results from the day of service included:
- 10 twin wooden bed frames assembled, sanded and painted: Mass Coalition for the Homeless Bed for Every Child Project
- 25 bags of mulch and 5 bags of potting soil spread; 2 large pallets of flowers planted: Lynn Shelter Association
- 5 cubic yards of loam for 11 flower beds planted; 50 financial literacy kits assembled: Beverly Children’s Learning Center
- 10 bins of clothing sorted for 150 labeled bundles of outfits: Fostering Care
- 222 pounds of food collected to make 184 meals; 100+ soup kits prepared: Acord Food Pantry
- 500 pounds of food sorted and stacked: Haven from Hunger
