Advanced Theater Arts Presents 'Shoes Along the Highway'

Ninth grade students in Shore's Advanced Theater Arts program presented Shoes Along the Highway, a one-act play by Maureen Brady Johnson, at the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild's middle school festival on April 27. The students premiered their staging at Shore on April 24.

For their festival performance, Shore's grade 9 actors, assisted by eighth graders on sound and lighting, earned a rating of "excellent" and a silver medal. Three students received All-Star awards for their individual portrayals: Camryn Georges, Cameron White, and Lauren Zion. The play centers around Jeremy (White), who is inspired to wonder about shoes he sees along the highway on a cross-country trip to a new home. Through photography, Jeremy attempts to draw attention to the stories behind the shoes—he wants to use his art to make people think. When he meets another young artist (Zion) at a new school, he discovers a surprising connection between her and one of the shoes he photographed.

The Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild exists for the charitable and educational purpose of promoting and strengthening excellence, access, and education in the theatrical arts for middle and secondary school students and teachers.
