Students, Teachers Raise $6,790 for Heifer International

This spring, 71 third, fourth, and fifth grade students and their teachers read more than 800 books to raise $6,790 in Heifer International's Read-to-Feed program.

The money raised will go toward the purchase of four heifers (cows), five water buffalos, three llamas, four goats, one sheep, three pigs, three rabbits, six bee colonies, 19 flocks of chickens, seven flocks of ducks and geese, two irrigation pumps, two bundles of tree saplings, two animal care kits, and the funds to send two girls to school. Thanks to matching gifts provided to Heifer International by a very generous group of donors, Shore’s entire donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar, helping Heifer reach its goal of raising $100,000 through read-a-thons by the end of June.

While encouraging reading, the Read to Feed program is designed to heighten students’ awareness that their actions make a difference in the lives of others. As students read more books, they enable more families to receive gifts of livestock and training. The animals then provide families with a reliable source of food and income from extra agricultural products such as milk, honey, or eggs.

Globally, Heifer International works to connect farmers with value chains that provide an increase in income. Multiplied by strong social capital and women’s empowerment, their work results in a sustainable solution to world hunger and poverty. Heifer’s practice of "Passing on the Gift" transforms recipients into donors and helps build strong, resilient communities.
