First Graders Open Mini-Marketplace

On May 25, Pre-K and Kindergarten students along with parents and faculty and staff visitors came with plenty of quarters to experience the "First Grade Mini-Marketplace," a bustling bazaar where Grade 1 students offered hand-crafted goods and services for sale.

The festive market was the culmination of the first graders' study of economics. According to teachers Mary Kinahan and Laurel Fitzpatrick, students explored basic concepts including wants and needs, goods and services, and costs and profits; they also practiced math with U.S. coins. First graders put all they had learned into practice as they designed and implemented a business plan, built up product inventories, and created marketing materials to promote their businesses.

At the Mini-Marketplace, shoppers visited student "stores" where they could purchase crafts such as beaded dolls or rubber-band bracelets, or browse student-authored comic books and artworks. Some first graders sold valuable services such as hair-styling or cubby-cleaning, while others offered entertainment such as music on the violin, a comedy routine, or a dance demonstration—all for just 25 cents.

By the end of the day, students had earned jars-ful of quarters through their businesses. Proceeds will go toward purchasing new books for the Little Free Library which was built and installed at Appleton Farms by last year's first grade classes.
