Shore Launches Textile Recycling Program

Shore has partnered with Bay State Textiles to help divert unwanted clothing and other goods away from the landfill and back into the market as useful raw materials. Doug Lucey, Latin and English teacher and chair of Shore's Sustainability Committee, said, "This is another great step for the school toward reducing our impact on the environment!"

Bay State Textiles installed a campus collection bin at the north end of the parking lot next to the Winslow Building. Shore families simply bag their dry, unwanted items and drop them into the recycling container, which Bay State empties on a regular basis. For those wondering exactly what can be recycled through the textile program, Lucey explained, "Worn clothing, sheets, shoes, cleats, backpacks, gloves, small rugs, stuffed animals, and many more items can be accepted."

Nonetheless, Lucey reminded, Shore's existing reuse initiatives, including the Replay Closet and Rummage Sale, remain the preferred destination for used clothes and other essentials still in good condition, such as House t-shirts, sports gear, and the like. "The Bay State Textiles program is specifically designed to capture items that are beyond reuse as-is," said Lucey.

Bay State Textiles serves over 120 municipalities throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut, with drop-off bins located at hundreds of public and private schools. According to the company, 21 billion pounds of textiles are thrown away in the United States every year. Of these, 45% can be reused, 30% can be turned into wiping cloths, and 20% can be recycled into new products.

The complete list of items that can be recycled through the program includes the following:
