Fall Rummage Sale Benefits Local Community

Shore's fall Rummage Sale, a decades-long tradition, is much more than a parent-led fundraiser. While it's true that sales of donated, gently used clothing, housewares, books, sports equipment, jewelry, furniture, and electronics provide needed funding for the Shore Parents Association—allowing it to support activities for the school throughout the year—the sale's biggest beneficiaries are local nonprofits and the families they serve, says parent and Rummage Co-Chair Penny Xifaras Jones.

"The Rummage Sale is in many ways a service to our extended community in Beverly and the North Shore," Jones explains. "People come to us and shop here because they cannot afford to shop anywhere else, and they know they will find excellent buys in great condition. Once we are finished with Rummage, we donate at least three tons of goods to local charities who desperately need them to help the families who depend on their services."

On Saturday, October 28, the public is invited to the Howard Gymnasium from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to shop from a treasure trove of high-quality home décor, garden accessories, books, outerwear, sporting goods, and much more. The event is regarded as one of the North Shore's best. For generations, Shore families have donated gently used items to be sold each year for next to nothing.

Says parent and Co-Chair Robert Scholnick, "What's great about Rummage is seeing an incredible quantity of well cared-for items find a second or even third home, instead of going to a landfill. It fits right in with Shore's increasing emphasis on sustainability and service learning, which students become familiar with as early as Pre-K."

According to Co-Chair Zhee Johnson Hyre, also a Shore parent, "Every member of the school community plays their part. Children donate books, clothing, and toys they've outgrown; teachers, students, and administrators assist with setup, organization, checkout, and cleanup; and, most importantly, parents provide hundreds of volunteer hours to make it all happen. It's never too late to sign up," she says.

Items to be found at the sale include: men’s and women’s clothing and shoes; teen and children's clothing; outerwear; accessories such as jewelry, belts, handbags, scarves, and luggage; sporting goods including skis, snowboards, bikes, helmets, racquets, clubs, cleats, and skates; gear for soccer, lacrosse, hockey, football, field hockey, baseball, and basketball; sports memorabilia; home décor such as mirrors, artwork, lights, linens, and kitchen and bath furnishings; bric-a-brac and decorative items; garden and yard games, accessories, and equipment; small furniture; and books, board games, craft/hobby kits, and music items.
