United in Service Event Helps Combat Summer Learning Loss
During the school year's second United in Service event, Shore families on April 21 again joined with the United Way of the North Shore to help create life-sized game boards for local child care centers.
"Summer learning loss can create an approximate three-month achievement gap in reading skills," says the United Way's Brigid Boyd. And, she explains, "low-income children can experience summer learning loss at a higher rate than their middle school peers. Upper- and middle-income children have enrichment opportunities that low-income children, whose families who are struggling to put food on the table, don’t get to experience."
Shore students and their families painted giant versions of Twister, Candyland, Chutes and Ladders, and other favorites in Shore's Dining Hall. The games will help children participating in the United Way's summer programs keep up their literacy skills during key summer months
