D'Ambrosio '11 Honored for Leadership as Yale Sophomore
Anthony D'Ambrosio '11 is the recipient of two recent distinctions in only his sophomore year at Yale.
Earlier this year, D'Ambrosio was selected as one of two Co-Coordinators of Yale's Dwight Hall, the largest campus-based student-run service organization in the country. Dwight Hall is the umbrella organization for more than 90 student-run member groups that engage 3,500 students each year in service and social justice activities. D'Ambrosio is the first sophomore in more than 50 years to be selected as a leader at Dwight Hall.
In March, he received a Newman Civic Fellow Award, which honors inspiring student leaders. D'Ambrosio was nominated by Yale for the award as "a student leader active in issues of sexual assault, campus climate, and leadership development."
In the fall of 2015, D'Ambrosio was a lead organizer of the Fearless Conference, a national event dedicated to sexual assault prevention, awareness and recovery, focused on previously overlooked issues.
Of his accomplishments on campus, Yale University President Dr. Peter Salovey wrote, "Anthony is an exceptionally thoughtful leader who has the rare capability of envisioning a better future and the work ethic to bring it about. With an unending commitment to service and a depth of innate skills, there is no limit to the positive impact Anthony will continue to make on this world."
Reflecting on his experiences at Yale and earlier, D'Ambrosio said, "I have always been passionate about public service, and my experience at Yale has only strengthened my interest."
In 2008, while a sixth grader at Shore, D'Ambrosio founded a nonprofit organization called American Sign Language (ASL) Sports (where his brother and fellow Shore alumnus Andrew '15 currently serves as Assistant Director and Treasurer). Over the past several years, the organization has hosted dozens of organized clinics and athletic events for children with physical, cognitive, and auditory disabilities.
"While at Yale," said D'Ambrosio, "I have found a second home within Dwight Hall, the Center for Public Service and Social Justice. Within the Hall, I have served in both At-Large and Co-Coordinator institutional positions, and I have focused on several public health initiatives in working closely with organizations such as Partners in Health and Community Health Educators."
Outside of Dwight Hall, D'Ambrosio served as Co-Founder and Director of Unite Against Sexual Assault Yale (USAY). He says that he hopes one day to utilize his experiences and privileges to fight for social justice, civic engagement, and public service.
