Third Annual United in Service Day to Kick Off Month of Events

For the third installment of the annual United in Service initiative, parent organizers are planning a month of community service opportunities for Shore families, beginning with a series of events around the North Shore on October 1.

The two previous United in Service days benefited dozens of community non-profits on a single Saturday; this year, parent volunteers wanted to extend the impact throughout an entire month.

"There were just too many causes we were interested in helping to confine the event to a single day," said United in Service co-chair Julee Haley. "We also wanted to ensure that families who had conflicts on October 1, the kickoff day, could still find service opportunities at other times throughout the month."

A partnership between Shore and the North Shore United Way, United in Service this year will benefit a host of local organizations. On kickoff Saturday, families will decorate get-well cards for patients in Beverly Hospital, assemble a storage shed for Beverly Children's Learning Center, participate in the Food Project's Serve and Grow Farm Day, and prepare and serve a community meal for the Open Door Pantry, among other efforts.

Throughout the month of October, Shore families will work with Backyard Growers, Plummer Home, Family Promise, Northeast Arc, Windrush Farm, and other beneficiaries.

"It's gratifying for us to be able to provide a month's worth of service to these great organizations," said United in Service co-chair Abby Albrecht. "Seeing Shore families building lasting relationships with local non-profits, beyond a single day in the fall, is incredibly exciting."
