Dress Code

DressCode

The dress code policy at Shore Country Day School creates a respectful, safe, and inclusive learning environment while allowing students the freedom to express their individuality. We believe in promoting a sense of community and preparing students for professional settings by instilling a sense of responsibility and appropriate attire choices. This implies trust in our students and our families as indicated in Shore’s Community Code. Our ultimate goal is to create an environment that more freely encourages learning, helps teachers to effectively teach, and enables students to be more receptive to learning by minimizing distractions and enhancing their comfort. Our approach is supported by two major themes:

Freedom within a Framework
  • Students at Shore Country Day School are encouraged to express themselves through their clothing choices while adhering to the guidelines outlined below.
  • The dress code should not infringe upon students' rights to self-expression, provided their attire is respectful, non-disruptive, and conducive to a positive learning environment.

Student and Caregiver Responsibility
  • Students and caregivers at Shore Country Day School share the responsibility for ensuring compliance with the dress code policy.
  • It is expected that students and caregivers will review and reinforce the dress code guidelines together to ensure understanding and adherence.

The Policy

  • General Dress Guidelines

    1. Clothing should be clean and neat, without excessive tears, rips, or fraying.
    2. Students are expected to wear attire that does not distract from the educational process or pose safety concerns.
    3. Clothing should cover undergarments and underwear.
    4. Clothing with offensive graphics, symbols, or messages that promote violence, hate speech, obscenity or activities not age-appropriate for students is strictly prohibited.

  • Safety Considerations

    1. Footwear must be safe and practical for physical activity, physical education, Project Adventure, and athletics. 
    2. Open-toed shoes, high heels, and other footwear that could pose a safety hazard are not permitted.

  • Additional Considerations

    1. Hats, hoods, and other head coverings are permitted, but students should be aware that teachers might ask for them to be removed to achieve specific learning goals.
    2. Exceptions may be made for religious or medical reasons, subject to appropriate approval.
By following these guidelines, we aim to foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive school environment at Shore Country Day School that allows students to express themselves while prioritizing safety and the values of our community. Please note that, on occasion, students will be asked to dress according to the special occasion guidelines posted below.

  • Special Occasions

    In some circumstances, students will be asked to dress as an occasion requires. 
    • Formal Occasions
      • A sweater or collared shirt (no hoodies)
      • Dress pants, skirt, or dress (no sweatpants, leggings, or blue denim)
    • Graduation
      • Blue blazer, khaki pants, white dress shirt, tie, and shoes with socks
      • White pant-suit or white dress with straps
    • Concerts
      • Black pants or a black skirt with black tights/socks and black shoes
      • White shirt, sweater, or turtleneck
